Founded on the campus of Howard University on January 15, 1908, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated ® will celebrate 112 years of merit and culture on January 15, 2020. Under the leadership of our International President, Dr. Glenda Glover, more than 75,000 active members and 1,018 chapters of AKA around the globe provide service to individuals, families, and communities. Specifically, through our current international platform of Exemplifying Excellence Through Sustainable Service℠, we work diligently to promote educational enrichment, health promotion, family strengthening, economic legacy and global impact, empowering and encouraging all people to reach their highest potential.
During the next three years of service in Chapel Hill, Mu Omicron Omega will implement the international program platform focusing on increasing the awareness of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) through the HBCU For Life Program. In support of this initiative, the Chapter has adopted Bennett College (Greensboro) and St. Augustine’s University (Raleigh) by supporting the students and the campus in a myriad of ways. Additionally, the Chapter will work with high schools in Chapel Hill, Carrboro and Pittsboro through our College Application Program (CAP) initiative to increase the submission of college applications.
Further, we will facilitate programs focusing on breast cancer awareness, caregiver awareness, and the arts with a specific focus on the Harlem Renaissance, economic legacy and local black business. We will also support local refugee initiatives; provide book awards to students who are college bound; participate in voter registration campaigns; and celebrate the legacy of Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in collaboration with the NAACP, local churches, and community members.
We invite you to observe us in Chapel Hill as we go about our work providing compassion, empowerment and peace everywhere you see us!
Thank you for visiting our website, and I hope you will visit again to discover what’s new!
